Let’s Talk About the Importance of Emotions 💭✨

Do you ever feel like you don’t really know what emotion you're experiencing?

Have you ever taken a moment to observe how your emotions impact your life?

How do they affect your body? How do you identify them? How do you manage them?

Emotions are always present, but we rarely stop to understand them. Although there are many questions surrounding emotions, one thing science and research agree on is essential: emotions are key in how we live, act, relate to others, and directly influence our health.

What are emotions?

📖 The Royal Spanish Academy defines emotion as:"An intense and fleeting disturbance of the mind, pleasant or painful, accompanied by some somatic commotion."

🧠 Daniel Goleman, psychologist and author of the book Emotional Intelligence, says:"Emotions are impulses to act. Each emotion prepares us to respond in a particular way to specific situations."

🌱 And if we look at the origin of the word, it comes from the Latin emotio, meaning "movement or impulse," and from emovere, meaning “to move outward.”In other words, emotions are energy that moves us, drives us, transforms us.

Emotion = Energy in Motion

Considering that we are physical beings, and remembering one of the fundamental laws of physics —energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transformed— we can affirm that human beings are driven by the emotions they experience.

And as long as that movement continues, the self and its reality are also transformed.

We see this every day:

✅ If I’m truly interested in becoming a professional, I’ll study, train, and over time become an engineer, artist, or doctor.

✅ If I enjoy exercising and make it part of my routine, my body will reflect health and well-being.

✅ If I love my body, I’ll take care of it, nourish it properly, and that will directly impact my physical and emotional health.

But the opposite also happens:

❌ If I’m not interested in becoming a professional, I won’t pursue it.

❌ If I don’t like moving or exercising, I’ll hardly achieve good physical condition.

❌ If I don’t care for or value my body, I won’t feed it properly, and that will affect my health.

📉 Just like in physics, movement can stop or even reverse, leading us to less prosperous scenarios.

Emotions determine the type of movement… and that movement determines the results.

🛑 The emotions that live in our mind and body either take us —or don’t— to a new state. That’s why recognizing and learning to manage them is a fundamental skill for living with purpose and fulfillment.

How have your emotions shown up throughout your life?

Have they supported you, guided you, or held you back?

Do you sometimes find it hard to name what you’re feeling?

💡 When an emotion stays with us for a long time, it can turn into a mood. For example, if sadness lingers for long periods, it can evolve into depression.Identifying and expressing what we feel is essential for emotional well-being.

Emotions are like colors 🎨

There are primary emotions, each with different intensities, and when they mix, they give rise to more complex, subtle, and deeper emotions.

Just like there are no “good” or “bad” colors, there are no good or bad emotions. Some we simply don’t like, but they are there for a reason: to warn us, protect us, guide us, or help us grow.

This is Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions

A powerful tool that helps us identify and understand what we’re feeling with more clarity.

I invite you to pause during the day: observe your emotions without judging them, locate them on Plutchik’s wheel, listen to them with curiosity, and finally decide whether you just need to accept and feel them, or if instead, you need to take action.

The more you understand them, the more you grow. You develop self-love, your empathy expands, and you begin to recognise the lenses through which you see the world. As with any skill, the more you practice it, the more you can become a master of emotional management. 🌟

As you identify your emotions, you become more present, you understand your inner world better, and you also understand those around you more clearly.

By learning to recognise them, we can also learn to accept, manage, or face them more consciously.

💬 Here are a few reflection questions:

🔹 What emotions do you feel or experience throughout your day?

🔹 How do they manifest in your work, at home, with your partner or your children?

🔹 What emotions would you like to experience more often in those spaces?

🔹 Which ones would you like to transform?

These kinds of questions open the door to self-awareness and change. And with that foundation, we can create a life that is more coherent, loving, and authentic. 🌿
